Foreword

It gives me great pleasure to know that a felicitation volume to honour Dr. B.R.Mani is being published by his students and well-wishers. It is indeed a worthy and commendable task. have been closely associated with his family and his two uncles, viz. Shri Chandra Mauli Mani Tripathi, IRES, and Mr. C.D.Tripathi, IAS have been my very good friends as both of them were keenly interested in the study of Ancient Indian History and Archaeology. Having known him intimately for now about more than twenty five years. I have always been impressed by his dedication, commitment and passion for studies and researches in the field or Ancient Indian History. Culture and Archaeology. Dr. Mani is a renowned scholar and respected academician. His area of research is not just limited to a micro-area. The scope of his research covered India and the neighboring civilizations of the ancient World. I have great appreciation for his contribution to our knowledge of the Ancient Indian Art and Archaeology. Unlike other countries, Indian culture is not based on material culture alone. Indian culture is basically evolved from Shastras formulated from the Vedic thought by the Rishis. Indian polity, social customs, traditions, faiths and material cultures are the developments out of meditation (single pointed attention). Tapas (wait for the result) and intellectual exercise (to make it comprehendible to others) of the ancient rishis. Archeology has helped us in tracing our ancient history from the past providing us material artifacts for about two centuries. The new trends in archeology are also stepping forward to consider the collective memory of generations as sources of history which are still available in form of tribal lore, folklore and Vedic-lore in form of Orature as sources for history. This would help us bridging-up the missing link between known and unknown worlds of the remote Indian past. Hope the historical researches of Dr. B.R.Mani in the coming years would address this problem to improve our understanding of ancient past. He is in true sense a most friendly and most unassuming perfect gentleman whom I admire. Besides his busy schedule as Additional Director General, he is still engaged in research and other academic activities like attending seminars and delivering lectures. It is therefore indeed a praiseworthy endeavour to highlight his life, ideas and scholarship by publishing a volume in his honour and I congratulate the editors for undertaking this task.
I sincerely wish Dr. B.R. Mani a very long, active, prosperous and peaceful life.
