Book Description

From the Jacket:

In Ayurveda Marmas are mentioned. Susruta Samhita deals with Marmas elaborately. Those who practise Ayurvedic Massage should have the general knowledge about Marmas. Now a days the Acharyas of Kalari Payattu (Martial Art) know the Marmas and the Marma treatment.

By massage Marmas are protected and also activated. Some diseases can be treated or controlled by activating the Marmas. There are 19 Marmas which are damaged. The prognosis is sudden death due to diminution of fire of the body. So those Marmas should be well protected. Vishalyaghna Marmas (3) are also very difficult to treat if anything is stuck on those points because by removing the foreign matter from the body the would causes the air to escape and the contact with the Marma is lost.

In olden days the Ayurvedic doctors had the knowledge of some Marma points where they used to press and the patient became unconscious and the surgery was done. After the operation another Marma point was pressed and the patient regained his consciousness.

If any Marma is damaged the body gets some trouble. If Marmas are well activated some diseases can be cured. It is well mentioned in this book.

About the Author:

The author, Shri S.V. Govindan, hails from the village Manassery in Ottapalan, situated in the Palghat district of Kerala in southern India. Born on December 24, 1924, Govindanji is the youngest son in a family of five children. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Kerala where he was educated by his brothers who were school teachers at the time. Govindanji has come a long way in gathering valuable experience not only as a teacher in various Khadi Vidyalayas in the country, but more so as an expert masseur with a healing and sympathetic hand.

Govindanji, a devoted social worker, is a disciple of Acharya Vinoba Bhave. He has been active in the field of Sarvodaya work for many years. The usefulness, scientific reliability, and simplicity of massage as a way to serve the masses attracted him. He wanted to help those for whom the conveninience and amenities of costly medicines were out of reach. The value of this useful technique is often overlooked, even by the enlightened. When Govindanji was initiated into this field of massage by none other thatn Shri K. Kelappan, a national leader from Kerala, he realized that it was one of his missions to promote this useful technique by study and propagation. By reading and observation he learned the theory and practice of massage. Encouraged by Vinobaji Bhave, Govindanji wrote his first publication in Hindi Maalish Ka Marma. The practicality of the book attracted many who were interested in this field. Many people read it and encouraged the author to bring out the English version of it.

Preface

I have mentioned about Marmas in 'Ayurvedic Massage for Health and Healing'. Many readers asked me why Marmas are given in the massage book. Though I had explained in short the role of Marmas in the techniques of massage, some massage practitioners wanted to know more about Marmas and if any of the Marmas is injured what kind of treatment can be done.

So I collected the necessary information from several books and prepared this new book.

The diseases such as headache, urinary problem, torticolis, facial paralysis, hemicrania, cardiac pain, psychosomatic illness etc. have direct connection with certain marmas. It is well explained in Ayurveda.

The chakras have connection with some marmas. So concentration of the prana on the chakra points naturally has effect on the concerned Marmas.

For the proper protection of Marmas and to keep health in good condition Yogasanas, Mudras, Pranayamas and meditation should be practised. Hence I hope this book will be helpful to the readers who really want to know about the Marmas and how the Marmas can be treated if injured.

Health is wealth.
