Book Description
Preface
Lila Ray was the married name of Alice Virginia Orndorf born in 1910 at El Paso, Texas, U.S.A. After her marriage in 1930 she identified herself with the Bengalees and their language and literature. She translated JAGARI by Satinath Bhaduri, GANADEVATA by Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay and BHUBAN SHOME by Banaphul. Gramophone records of some poems translated by her were sent to America at the instance of a university there for private circulation. The same poems were sent to the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi for publication in book form but the proposal did not materialise. The poems along with many others translated by her are going to be published in book form, after her death in 1992. It is her love's labour which is not lost.

Foreword
Goethe, like Quasimodo, believed that poetry can be translated. Translation is, like poetry, an art. The practice of any art is an arduous and exacting undertaking but it is not an impossible one. Success is not ruled out though it does not follow as a matter of course. Great translations, like the English translation of the Bible, are a permanent asset to any literature. They occupy a position in the language of translation equivalent to that enjoyed by the original in the language of its conception.
