Description
About The Book

NARMADASHANKAR LALSHANKAR DAVE ( 1833 —1886 ), is popularly known as Narmad. His literary activities opened many new and diverse directions for poetry and prose, both creative and critical in Gujarat. Narmadashankar was born at Surat and had his primary education in Surat and higher education in Bombay. He participated actively in the movement for social reform. He was one of the founders of `Buddhi — Vardhak Sabha'. He began his literary activities as a means to help social reform. He decided to take up writing as his main profession.

Narmadashankar is recognised as the father of modern poetry and prose in Gujarati, because almost all the characteristics of modern poetry and modern prose are for the first time seen in ample measure in his poetry and prose.

About The Author

In this monograph, Shri Gulabdas Broker, an eminent Gujarati writer, in his masterly manner has touched all the points concerning literature, and life of Narmadashankar. He gives a clear appraisal of Narmad and his contribution to Gujarati Literature.
