The sons of Brahma came to the gates of Vishnu's abode. The gatekeepers, Jaya and Vijaya, did not know who they were and refused them entry. The sons of Brahma were enraged and cursed them, "You shall be born thrice on earth. In each of the births you shall be slain by Vishnu or his incarnation. Only then shall you regain your place in Heaven". Jaya and Vijaya came down first as the Asura brothers, Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu; then as the Rakshasas, Ravana
; and lastly as the evil Kshatriyas, Shishupala and Dantavaktra. Hiranyaksha was slain by Vishnu in his Boar incarnation
. Hiranyakashipu hated Vishnu for having killed his brother. But his son, Prahlad, was an ardent devotee of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu tried by various methods to sway the mind of his son, but in vain. Ultimately, the evil Hiranyakashipu brought about his own destruction, and the triumph of Prahlad was established by Vishnu
. The story given in this book is based on the Bhagawat Purana
and the Vishnu Purana.
