Foreword
I am happy to introduce the present volume titled Pravesaka of Acyutapisaroti (Edited with English Translation) by Prof. P. Narayanan Namboodiri as the 58th volume in the Calicut University Sanskrit Series.

Pravesaka is an elementary work on Sanskrit grammar authored by Trkkaptiyur Acyutapisaroti. He is well known as the preceptor of Melputtur Narayana Bhattatiri the author of celebrated stotra work Narayaṇiyam. In fact Pisaroti was a great scholar of Vyakarana and Jyotisa. He was one of the last links in the celebrated lineage of mathematical and astronomical tradition that flourished in the central Kerala during the medieval period. The Rasigolasphutaniti, Uparagakryakarma, Uparagavimsati and Karanottama are some of his astronomical works.

Preface
Grammar study in India has gone through several changes from its level of application. It was Jayaditya and Vamana who introduced the trend of rearranging the aphorisms of Astadhyayi for the analytical derivation of words. They explained the sutra-s according to the order of Astadhyayi and put them together for the derivation. Rupavatara of Dharmakirti and Prakriyakaumudi of Ramacandra are similar works. Sastrakavya tradition of India has also solved the problems of analysis of words. These texts have brought forward the examples of Papiniyasutra-s without diminishing the poetical beauty of the passage.

Pravesaka is a small piece of work and Astadhyayi composed by Trkkaptiyur Acyuta Pisiroti, teacher of Melputtur Narayana Bhattatiri. As a versatile scholar Pisiroti presented the principles of Astadhayl in simple verses. To the beginners of the science of language, this text supplements an overall preview on the fundamentals of grammar. As the of presentation is straight and simple, students can easily set the aphorisms to obtain the formation. Most of the topics begin with a precise introduction to enable the students to get an overall view of the subject matter. Pisaroti supplies both examples and counter examples to justify the authority of each and every sutra.

The Pravesaka, a primer to Sanskrit grammar, is a beautiful work written in verses. The author himself states in his introductory remarks that the work is written in simple language, as it is meant for new entrants. Dividing the entire gamut of derivational analytical grammar into several sections, the work elucidates the prosaic grammar in beautiful poetical language.

Prof. Namboodiri has translated this beautiful work in simple English. I am sure that lovers and scholars of Sanskrit would love to read this book.
