Introduction

The spirituality does not reject life but perfects it. Therefore there is one’ question which often arises when a person decides to take the first step in to the spiritual path: ‘‘What should I do?” The life, the surroundings, the work Are still the same but one would like to know what is one’s Duty? What is the way? What can one do immediately? In fact how to begin.

A pert char and practical answer to this question has been given bi the Mother. When the Sri Aurobindo Society as newly formed, she was asked what every member could do every day, she replied: Devote some time to study something from the writings of Sri Aurobindo or herself according to the query within.

Sit quietly for a few minutes and ask one self why I am here? TA/hat exactly do I want to achieve in life? Devote one hour daily for some work for the and do it in a selfless and unegoistic spirit. This is the minimum.

The Mother’s suggestions are no doubt very useful for all those who would like to enter the path of sadhana and follow the way shown by Sri Aurobindo. At first glance these seem to be very simple and easy to put into practice. But a little deeper study and effort makes us realise that they are not as simple as they appear to be. There are many ways of reading and not all are equally effective. What are the questions one must ask oneself and how to find their answers? What is the meaning of selfless work? This book attempts to throw some light on these questions primarily through the writings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

Then, just as there is the dilemma of the individual sadhak, so too there is the dilemma of the spiritual collectivity or centre; what should be the foundation and guiding light of its endeavour? The Mother has given a very beautiful and revealing answer: “To open a centre is not sufficient in itself It must be the pure hearth of perfect sincerity, in a total consecration to the Divine”.

This mantra of the Mother has been elaborated by Shri Nolini Kanta Gupta in his article ‘The Ideal Centre’, with the help of three more mantras. We hope that this book would be of help to all spiritual seekers and centres everywhere who are trying to grow in consciousness and are on the threshold of a new spiritual adventure.

From Book

Sri Aurobindo came upon the earth to announce the manifestation of the supramental world and not merely did he announce this manifestation but embodied also in part the supremental force and showed by example what one must do to prepare oneself for manifesting it. The best thing we can do is to study all that he has told us and endeavour to follow his example and prepare ourselves for the new manifestation.

This gives life its real sense and will help us to overcome all obstacles.

Lest us live for the new creation and we shall grow stronger and stronger by remaining young and progressive.
