Simple Remedies for Common Maladies
Description
Preface

Ayurveda is a system of Indian medicine now practiced all over the world as a complementary system. Herbs have been prime medical agents in traditional and holistic therapies. From the time immemorial plants have been utilized, praised and worshipped by mankind. Millions of people for centuries have worshipped several trees thinking that their every part possesses deity such as Lord Brahman in the root, Lord Vishnu in the bark, Lord Shiva in the branches and many Gods in the leaves. Judicial combinations of these herbs in the form of simple recipes or compound formulations have a specific effect upon the body and mind. Ayurvedic practitioners have identified a number of medicinal preparations for curing various ailments and diseases, which are not completely curable in other systems.

Ayurvedic medicine has become an increasingly accepted alternative medical treatment in America during the last two decades. In the recent past more and more doctors of modern medicine in our country and abroad are also showing keen interest towards Ayurveda and want to know much about the fundamentals and applied aspects. Keeping this in view the authors made an attempt by bringing out the intended for the learners as well as practitioners of Ayurveda, especially for the western.

The book is planned in such a way for the regular use of a medical practitioner by providing most efficacious and proven simple remedies, compound formulations and also an ideal prescription. The book is enriched with color photographs of herbs is not only for the accurate botanical identification but also creating permanent impression in the minds of readers regarding the utility of a particular herb in that specific condition.

We trust that this book will be certainly useful as a ready reckener for the students as well as practitioners of Ayurveda. Similarly we also hope that this book will be incorporated soon in the curriculum of short-term courses for the western scholars, who intended to learn Ayurveda, as this is unique in its presentation.

The authors are highly beholden to the most erudite scholar of Ayurveda, Prof. R.H. Singh and Prof. P. Murali Krishna, Tirupathi, who are the source of inspiration for this humble attempt. The authors wish to express special thanks to Prof. Dr. Ashok Satpute, Principal, and Govt. Ayurveda Medical College, Mysore for writing Foreword for this book. Our heartfelt thanks are due to the most versatile scholar of Ayurveda Prof. K. Nishteswar for writing prologue and also editing this work. We extend our sincere thanks to the publishers, Chowkhamba Sanskrit Series Office, Varanasi for arranging the publication of this book.

Foreword

Contribution of Ayurveda to Health care in India is very significant and by late it is appreciable. The global recognition to this health science is making it possible to explore it in depth.

The rich knowledge base of Ayurveda, especially that which amassed in the texts is both enormous and contributory to the science of health and treatment. It is also necessary to pool very effective remedies and formulations spread out in large number of scriptures.

The present work “Simple remedies for common maladies” is a significant leap towards achieving this goal.

The authors- a good continuation of experience and youthful enthusiasm has given the remedies, which are useful in various diseases. The medications, that include from Simple juices and Decoctions to Churnas, Vatis and Rasouhadies. As a matter of fact different combinations of medicines are not for the common man to use but for the usage of practitioners. Even the faculty and clinical students can study these combinations in detail to understand the significance, pros and cons, while prescribing, because there may not be an ideal set of formulations for a disease. Naturally it varies according to different variables. However those which are given in the present book can be good guidelines especially for young practitioners of Ayurveda.

The book is picturesque as it consists of many photographers of plants (though repeated in different pages) which add value. Both Sanskrit names and Latin names are given.

“The Simple remedies for common maladies” is a work which itself is contribution in the area of Chikitsa. It is for the Ayurvedic doctors to utilize it judicially, applying the proper principle of diagnosis and treatment of Ayurveda.

I whole heartedly welcome this book to the Ayurveda Vangmaya and hope that it will further enhance the effort to boost the confidence of Ayurvedic treatments, especially the younger practitioners.
