Book Description
Foreword
I am very happy to introduce Subbarainiyam (Collected Sanskrit works of P. S. Subbarama Pattar) as the 47th volume of the Calicut University Sanskrit Series.

Sri P. S. Subbarama Pattar (1889-1977), whose Sanskrit writings are compiled in this work, is a great Sanskrit scholar from Kerala, who worked untiringly for the propagation of Sanskrit studies. He was a master of Sanskrit grammar and poetics. He was honored by the President of India for his erudition in Sanskrit in the year 1970. He has written profusely in chaste Sanskrit on a wide range of topics. Simplicity and clarity of expression are his credo.

Subbarama Pattar was associated with great scholars and academicians of the times. He was a student of celebrated scholar of Vyakarap), Cennamangalam Ayya sastrikal. He was also an excellent teacher. Prof. Joseph Mundassery, the famous critic and the first education minister of Kerala state, was a student of Sri Subbarama Pattar. Padmabhushan Vaidyabhushanam K Raghavan Thirumulpad (1920-2010) of Chalakudy was another beloved student of Sri Subbarama Pattar. So also is Smt. K. B. Sridevi, the famous Malayalam Novelist. In fact, it was Sri Pattar who initiated Sri Thirumulpad to the study of ayurveda.

Sri P. S Ananthanarayana Sastrikal, a reputed scholar of Vyakarapa was his elder brother.

For a long time Sri Pattar worked as Sanskrit teacher in the Sacred Heart’s School at Chalakudy. For a while he worked as the editor in the Mangalodayam press of Thrissur. He worked as a Research officer in the erstwhile Cochin state too, for a short period. At the time of retirement he was working as a Lecturer in the Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur.

Many of his articles were published in reputed Sanskrit journals and popular magazines of the times. Apart from research articles, he has composed literary pieces in Sanskrit choosing , various genres like devotional lyric, story, poetry, play and biography. Through these compositions he seems to suggestively express his firm conviction that any subject under the sun can effectively be discussed in simple Sanskrit without compromising clarity. He wrote with equal ease and clarity in Sanskrit whether the subject at hand is the theory of sphota, or the phonetic law of Grim, or economics and agriculture.

Dr. K. Murali (son of Sri Raghavan Thirumulpad) and Dr. K. V. Vasudevan, students of Vaidyabhushanam Raghavan Thirumulpad, have taken great pains to compile and edit the compositions of Sri Subbarama Pattar. They deserve the appreciation of the scholarly world for this academic pursuit, which they humbly call as a tribute to their `Acharyaparampara.'

We thank Smt. Narayani Ammal, wife of Sri P. S. Subbarama Pattar for having given consent to publish this collection through Calicut University Sanskrit Series. Sri R. Venkatakrishnan (Mumbai), Smt. Narayani Ammal's nephew also deserves special thanks for extending all necessary support in this regard.

I am very much confident that this volume would be received with great enthusiasm by the scholarly world.

I express our deep sense of gratitude to Sri. Omprakash. V, the Publication Officer and Smt. Laly Francis. K., Lay out Designer for bringing out this volume promptly.
