Description
About the Book

A brief history of the evolution of ragams, the computation of seventy two melakartha ragams in sarigama syllables and western syllables, the treatise on melodic and harmonic systems of music etc., specially attract our attention.

It is a genius work and a historic event indeed, to write in english, a concise dictionary of carnatic music. Dr. Tomy Plathottam mcbs has explained exceptionally well, the technical terms of carnatic music, to the world community. The definitions and short explanations have a splendour of precisions. The dictionary contains so many precious informations on the musical topics, such as the melakartharagams, the janyaragams, the varieties of thalams, important musicians, famous composers, well known compositions, musical traditions, musicological principles etc. The dictionary on the first page, starts with terms such as abheri, acoustics and adiguru. It concludes with words such as yamam, yamunakalyani and yazh. I am sure that having all these informations at the fingertips, is a great advantage for us, and for the future generations.
