Western India in Historical Transition
Western India in Historical Transition
Description
About the Book:

Nineteenth century onwards, when European thinkers started writing on India, the village community and caste system have loomed large as the most striking characteristics of Indian society. In spite of this preoccupation, however, studies of caste system and village community in pre-colonial India have been hampered by a dearth of historical documents in native Indian languages. The medieval Marathi documents utilized extensively in this volume are a rather rare exception to this general circumstance.

In this volume the author proposes that the key concept that will help us understand the structure and function of local society in later medieval western India is the Vatam system. This system dictated the division of labour within the village community as well as the pargana (district) and prescribed the land rights of peasants over the lands they cultivated, the class relationship within local society and the hierarchical relationships at work in a caste community.

British colonial rule precipitated far-reaching changes in the social fabric in western India. The most prominent was the gradual disintegration of the Vatan system. Structural changes were also affected in the caste community caused by the so-called caste autonomy policy of the Bombay government. Finally, an ideological shift was brought about primarily by the replacement of the local autonomous judicial system with the modern judicial system of the British. These socio-cultural changes are investigated mainly through legal documents prepared under the Bombay administration.

About the Author:

Hiroyudi Kotani is Professor of History at the Tokyo Metropolitan University. He has specialized in medieval and modern Indian History with special reference to the history of the Marathas and the Bombay Presidency. His publications include Marx and Asia: A Critical Examination of the Concept of the Asiatic Mode of Production (1979, in Japanese), Methodology of History (1985, in Japanese), Caste System, Untouchability and the Depressed (ed. 1997, New Delhi), and Rituals as Popular Culture: Towards Historico-anthropological Understanding of Modern India (ed. 1998, Tokyo).

The books arrived today and I have to congratulate you on such a WONDERFUL packing job! I have never, ever, received such beautifully and carefully packed items from India in all my years of ordering. Each and every book arrived in perfect shape--thanks to the extreme care you all took in double-boxing them and using very strong boxes. (Oh how I wished that other businesses in India would learn to do the same! You won't believe what some items have looked like when they've arrived!) Again, thank you very much. And rest assured that I will soon order more books. And I will also let everyone that I know, at every opportunity, how great your business and service has been for me. Truly very appreciated, Namaste.
