Preface

When I was in the process of evolving the concept of Astromentoring, a client interaction happened. This client was working in a public sector company and still had five years to retire when the contact happened. The client approached me with the question of whether she can work post-retirement actively in any leadership position. The client had a need to work post-retirement not only because of financial reasons but also because of being physically in a position to work for a few more years post-retirement. When I look at the horoscope of the person, I saw that she can make financial gains post-retirement also. The next step was to look into which domain she will get into for a post-retirement job. I could see from the horoscope that she could get an opportunity to work in the Healthcare sector in general and in hospitals particularly. I advised the client that she can get into hospital administration post-retirement. It was a shock to the client because that hospital administration domain is entirely different than the domain she was working for the past thirty years. There is altogether no connection between the two domains. Till this point of time astrology was useful to identify what kind of a future lay ahead for the person. It was the easy part.

Then the client asked me a question what she should do in the next five years to get engagement in the hospital administration domain after retirement. I had observed two things in the horoscope concerning the design of the person, and if these two aspects are not handled, it would not be possible for her to make a transition from one domain to another apart from managing the retirement blues. There is tremendous insecurity in the person because of the position of the moon in the horoscope. Moon is connected with Saturn in her horoscope and made her prone to intense feelings of insecurity regarding everything whether it is the health of the family members or her own financial stability or even unfavorable events or interactions in office. If the insecurity is not handled properly, making a transition from one domain to another after retirement is going to create a tremendous amount of stress and strain on the person. The second aspect was the change of leadership style required when transiting from the public sector to a private sector institution. The work culture of the public sector is different than the work culture of the private sector. The leadership and management style of the person needs to undergo a change. In addition to this, she also has to acquire a qualification in hospital administration to make her candidature worth consideration. Since she had five years to go, I advised her to get into an institution that awards recognized degrees in hospital administration. It was two years of hard work, and she could complete the course and successfully acquire a degree in hospital administration. All this while she had to be given confidence that what she is doing is right so that she does not suffer from the bouts of insecurity and discontinue the course. That is where a proper mentoring methodology was used.

As luck would have it, she had the opportunity to work as a mentor to a hospital being run by the same public sector company. That gave her exposure to how the private sector Institutions work. During this time she had the opportunity to meet many executives from the private sector and learn from them the kind of work culture that exists in the private sector domain. It has helped her to get a proper understanding of the differences between her current style of Management and what kind of changes she needs to make in her leadership style to blend with the private sector Institution without pain. The twin aspects of insecurity and desired changes in the leadership style have been handled through the Astromentoring process that I conceptualized during the 5 years. At the time of retirement, she was absolutely ready to jump into the next job after having overcome the feelings of insecurity and after having affected the necessary changes in her leadership style. Today she is the head of a hospital and has made the transition very quickly and without any inhibition.

This experience gave me the confidence that Astromentoring is very effective to help people realize their potential. In fact, I got the proof of concept. It gave me an insight that mentoring is improving the aspirations of the people or correcting aspirational Deficiencies. This experience gave the empirical evidence necessary for the concept of Astromentoring that I developed.

Let me put it across in the very beginning that this book is not about astrology. This book is a study on the interface between Astrology and Mentoring. I do not want my readers to keep astrology in their minds and read this book. I want my readers to look at my corporate experience in many leadership positions where I believed that mentoring can produce exponentially growing results from people in any position and at any level. Mentoring has been a strong pillar of my leadership style, and it has given me immense satisfaction in my life.
