Book Description
Preface
"Diabetes is a wonderful affection, not very frequent among men, being a melting down of the flesh and limbs into urine.... The patients never stop making water, but the flow is incessant, as if from the opening of acqueducts. The nature of the disease, then, is chronic, and it takes long period to form; but the patient is short-lived, if the constitution of the disease be completely established; for the melting is rapid, the death speedy"

Aerates the Cappadocia, Greek Physician, 100 AD

"India is sitting on a diabetes time-bomb and it is ticking very fast". There is a tsunami of type 2 diabetes mellitus which with its accompanied complications and co-morbidities is poised to become a "numero-uno" challenge for our country. Even though we have various treatment modalities available, yet there are many unmet needs of treatment. India, our nation, is rich with many alternative systems of medicine and needless to mention, they have served and delivered a great deal in the country's health care and research.

This monograph will usher in a new phase of collaboration between the various systems of health care available in the country and pave the way for an integrated and holistic approach to diabetes care, education and above all diabetes research in Homoeopathy. Very eminent dialectologists and endocrinologists including academics, clinicians and research scholars from the top institutes of the country have provided their valuable inputs in this monograph.

The objective of the monograph has been to be concise, easily readable. The contributors have purposely avoided details and complicated issues. This monograph is centered round simple chapters on history of diabetes, providing the journey from ants surrounding urine as the diagnostic of diabetes to newer modes of treatment with analogues and incretions.

The chapter on Epidemiology describes the global diabetes scenario and particularly the state of diabetes in our country. It has also provided with the latest figures regarding diabetes and also the Diabetes Atlas. There is mention in the text regarding the complication profiles and their prevalence.

The diagnosis and classification centers round the WHO definition, types of diabetes, comparative note between the major types. There is description of signs and symptoms, as well as clinical presentations. The treatment strategies include importance of good glycolic control, goals of treatment and major pillars of treatment like diet and nutrition, oral anti-diabetic drugs, incretion based therapy and insulin. The chapter on the preventive strategies depicts the important issues in diabetes and describes the Diabetes Prevention Programme of Finland and the Indian Diabetes Prevention Programme. It also gives the follow-up data.

Homoeopathy part deals with homoeopathic concept of evolution of disease in general and diabetes mellitus in particular. Homoeopathic therapeutics on diabetes mellitus contains indications of important medicines of different groups, viz. Polychrests, Sarcodes, and Nosodes including bowel Nosodes, Organ remedies and Indian drugs. Information related to Reportorial index of diabetes symptoms and its complications are also recorded in this monograph. Besides, it also catalogues the outcome of the research work done around the world, on this epidemic, through Homoeopathy, including the contribution of the CCRH which is the real strength of the monograph.

It is hoped that anything that contributes towards understanding of the problem helps, and it is in this context that the monograph is offered to the homoeopathic profession. Our Endeavour will be honored if the monograph will be useful to the research workers, clinicians, teachers, students and lovers of Homoeopathy, in their respective fields.
