Book Description
Preface

The paradigm shift is visible when we try to understand different ancient civilization and technology that existed thousands of years ago. No knowledgeable person, having open mind acceptable to changes in established notions, would dare to call these civilizations and cultures as primitive. Researches in different faculties of study including metallurgy, medical field, plant and human genetics do point towards the advanced knowledge that existed in those days. The arrogance associated with a proud feeling of the so-called excellent technological advancement is slowly evaporating and is now getting replaced by a feeling of humbleness and reverence towards the ancient wisdom.

Unfortunate reality is that the present Ayurvedic community is not keeping pace with its contemporary allopathic and modern science counterparts. Barring a few self-learned Ayurvedic experts, entire Ayurvedic field is gripped with the feeling of insufficiency, inferiority and lack of confidence in our own science and system.

The legendary hepto- and octo-genarians of Ayurvedic faculty as well as practitioners have innumerable experiences and examples of treating incurable and rare diseases, which once evoked skepticism in the minds of young Ayurvedic professionals. Now the trend has changed to acceptance of their vast experiences. However, a huge gap still exists between their knowledge, the ancient knowledge and the level of understanding by the present Ayurvedic scientific community. For example asthisaushirya (osteoporosis) and its exhibition as a feature of majjavaha srotas dushti, asthivaha srotas as a separate entity (Charak), the origins (mula) of various dhatuvaha srotas during embryogenesis etc. pose several questions in young mind.

The interactive workshops are aimed at clearirig such doubts to a possible extent, filling the existing lacunae between two systems of medicine and motivating the young doctors. A humble start was made about five years ago. Ncw we could identify a team of experts (consisting of three successive generations), which is willing to do its best in this direction to understand and explain the texts to apply them to the present health needs. This team, like young Ayurvedic professionals, is eagerly waiting to participate in these workshops. This kind of interactive workshops serves the purpose of maintaining, understanding and developing the professional knowledge, skills, and experience with simultaneous expansion of different faculties of Ayurveda by incorporating the modern technology and work done by contemporary medicine to decipher the shlokas and commentaries written on the texts.

As is common with any series of work, the books released during the Interactive workshops are also evolving in several ways e.g. by incorporation of different figures for easy understanding of subject, and special subchapters written by senior experts in format of question-answer. This book contains one such special subchapter on osteoporosis in question-answer form contributed by RAV Guru, Prof. P.V. Tewari, Varanasi.

Since the Ayurvedic texts are difficult to understand without proper knowledge of Sanskrit, the doubts raised by participants sometimes escape current important medical or health-related issues that require immediate attention as the patients do approach Ayurvedic medical practitioners for these problems. I am sure this will help the young Ayurvedic scholars in whose hands lie the future of the system.

This book includes only those issues, which are raised by P.G. scholars and teachers of different Ayurveda colleges with clarifications/answers by experienced faculty and practitioners with the intention to upgrading their knowledge and motivating to meeting the challenges of the present time.

I would like to express my gratitude to the Secretary and other officials of Department AYUSH and President and other Members of Governing Body for their constant support to RAV's activities. I would like to appreciate and thank all resource persons for contributing in the book. I thank my colleagues in RAV for their painstaking efforts to accomplish the given tasks and Dr. Sandhya Patel for assistance in preparation of the book.
