Preface to the Second Edition

The lectures on the Bhagavad Gita delivered by Swami Paramarthananda during the years 1995 to 2000 were published in a book form in three volumes, each containing the three shatkas in their respective order. All the three volumes were released by Swami Omkarananda, a ardent disciple of Swami Paramarthananda, consecutively in the years 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Swami Paramarthananda's masterly exposition of the Gita is in lucid and simple style. His lectures precise and clear in thoughts and expressions, deal not only with Gita but also other related works like the Upanishads; Brahmasutra and the commentary' on Gita by Sankara.

The volumes were overwhelmingly received by the reading public especially those deeply interested in the teachings of the Bhagavadgita. The 1000 copies of each volume published have almost been sold necessitating the publication of a second edition of these volumes.

The present edition carries necessary additions and corrections as was advised by the Swamiji and requested by the readers. The proof reading and corrections were taken up by Mrs. Sita Sundar Ram with the assistance of Ms. S. Annapurna, Ms. B. Ramadevi, Ms. V. Umamaheswari and Ms. S. Anusha all Ph.D. research scholars of the Kuppuswarni Sastri Research Institute.

M/s. Kayveekay Letter Prints have done a neat job. Our thanks are due to them.

Preface to the First Edition

The Samskrita Academy considers itself extremely fortunate to have been able to arrange for a series of talks on the Bhagavad Gita by Swami Paramarthananda, a true Sannyasin in every sense of the term. Swamiji has been conducting classes for more than two decades on the Upanisads, the Brahma Sutrs, the Gita and allied spiritual texts at various centres in Chennai, as well as in places like Anaikatti and Rishikesh. His talks are always unique for their remarkable lucidity, simplicity and directness.

Swamiji covered all the eighteen chapters of the Gita in talks in six years from 1995 to 2000. He gave the essence of each chapter of the Gita, in a very clear and analytical way making it easy for the listener to grasp the significance of the teachings of Lord Krishna.

His talks were recorded by Sastraprakashika Trust in cassettes. These were procured from the Trust for being played on the recorder and written down for the purpose of getting them printed. This arduous task was willingly taken up by Mrs. Malathi Ramaratnam and Mrs. Sarada Venkataramani as a labour of love, in their sincerity and eagerness to get them printed in book form, for the benefit of the reading public interested in acquainting itself with the essence of the teachings of Krishna. Words are not adequate to thank them for the excellent job done by them, writing down the talks from the tapes in neat handwriting in note books.

Thanks are due to Dr. C.L. Ramakrishanan, who retired as Director General of Police, Govt. of Tamilnadu, a well-read Sanskrit scholar for quickly going through these notebooks for necessary corrections. To begin with, the talks on the first six chapters of the Gita, considered as mainly dealing with Karma Yoga have been taken up for being published as a book to be released by Swami Omkarananda, a scholar-sannyasin who has closely associated himself with Swami Paramarthananda.
