Book Description

Prologue

In ancient Indian texts, biomedical application of various herbs, plants and plant-products has been described in detail. Modern Ayurveda has exploited some of the herbs and plant products following the ancient guidelines for their various biomedical applications, applications, but many of them are yet to be explored, identified and studied for their human uses. Among the studied ones, little is known about the biomedical applications of Rudraksa beads in general and of their various mukhis in particular. Modern studies on the medical uses of different mukhis of Rudraksas merely present the colourful interpretation of Puranic versions, unscientific method for their identification and characterization and are mainly concerned with their oral medicinal uses. There is no study dealing with physico-chemical properties of Rudraksa proper of different mukhis that have been attributed in Siva Purana to produce various biological effects merely by virtue of contacts with human body in the form of their rosary, or chanting mantras on them. Further, there is no information on effect organs of human body in Puranic uses of Rudraksas in general and also implications of different finger combinations for chanting different mantras through Rudraksa beads on them in particular Thus the physico-chemical properties of beads of Rudraksa proper of different mukhis and effect-mechanisms of beads on human body as described in the Siva Purana are yet to be studied.

This study presents a detailed analysis of physico-chemical properties of all the fourteen mukhis of Rudraksa beads for their identification and characterization, ascertains the human effect organs and in light of both elucidates the effect- mechanism of different mukhis of beads on human body in various Puranic uses. The analysis and synthesis suggest that Puranic ancient saints and sages.
