Foreword

It is my great privilege in bringing out the print version of this Book which contains 66 famous Kritis of the great Carnatic Music composer, Shri Muttusvami Dikshitar.

I had the great opportunity of learning them from my revered Guru Justice Shri T.L. Venkatarama Iyer who was generous in teaching me orally just like "Veda Adhyayana".

These were published in the Tamil Weekly "Svadesamitran" during mid 50's. At present, Smt. Subbalakshmi Chandrasekaran of Pennsylvania has done the monumental work of typesetting these Kritis with English notation and Sanskrit version. Even though the Book is being released after a long gap, it will go a long way in taking the works of Dikshitar all over the world.

There is no word of gratitude to mention about the generosity and affection of my Guru Sangita Kalanidhi Justice Shri. T.L. Venkatarama Iyer who imparted the Gems to me with very great authenticity.

Preface

Sangeetha Kalanidhi Shri B. Rajam Iyer is a living authority in rendering Shri Muttusvami Dikshitar's kritis. He had the benefit of learning these kritis under the tutelage of Shri T.L. Venkatrama Iyer, who himself had the privilege of learning them from Shri Ambi Dikshitar. Shri Rajam Iyer wrote swara notations to several Dikshsitar's compositions and these were published in 1956 in the Tamil Weekly, Svadesamitran. I came to know of the existence of these notations when Shri B.Rajam Iyer came to the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, in August 2003, to conduct a weeklong camp on Dikshitar Kritis in the presence of Pujya Swamij Dayananda Saraswati. I was fortunate to learn a few kritis as taught by Shri B. Rajam Iyer and was inspired by the method by which very difficult kritis were taught with ease. I, therefore, undertook the project of translating the original notations of the kritis into English for the benefit of the music students all over the world who may not be able to read Tamil. I am grateful that I had this opportunity, as the experience was valuable to me to appreciate the original Paadantaram of the great composers' kritis: The notations are in English and the Sahitya are written following the international scheme of Transliteration. The kritis are written in Devanagari as well as in Romanised English fonts. My Sincere Thanks and gratitude to Shri V. Swaminathan of New Jersey, USA for his guidance throughout this Project.
