About The Cover Page
Hiranyagarbha means imperishable substance, golden garbha or womb or embryo. It can also be considered as the luminous 'fire mist' or ethereal stuff from which the Universe was formed. This Hiranyagarbha is Brahma, in the gagged Brahma is considered to be born from a golden egg formed out of the seed produced by the first vikaras of the self existent or Svayambhu, and the seed was deposited in the waters. According to Manu (1:9) this seed became a golden egg, gloriously bright as the sun, in which the self-existent Brahman while remaining transcendent in its higher parts, evolved into Brahma the Creator, so he is regarded as a manifestation of the Self-existent. Hiranyagarbha was the first to describe eightfold or Atanga yoga. Hence depicting Hiranyagarbha as Sun god one who helps to control the sense organs (horses) from different distractions with the help of Yoga, this cover page has been designed. Sun god enlightens this universe with the knowledge of Yoga and provides a golden path towards spirituality and emancipation.

Foreword
The health care scenario is undergoing rapid change all over the world. Lifestyle related disorders, drug resistant diseases, problems of the growing geriatric population are on rise by the day. People are realizing though slowly and gradually that to be healthy one doesn't need expensive health care but a deeper understanding of how to eat, exercise and have the right attitude to life. It is here that Yoga seems a panacea to most problems of 21st century.

Yoga is already popular all over the world for various reasons best known to the individual practioner. The vast body of research in yoga therapy is further widening the acceptance of scope of this ancient Indian wisdom. The research papers about the relevance and importance of yoga therapy in psychosomatic diseases prompt not only the sick, but even healthy individuals to practice this great science.

Ayurveda and Yoga are inseparably linked. The current Syllabus includes yoga in the II Prof BAMS. A good reference book tailor made to satisfy the acadeanic interest of students and community and compilation of various references together at a place for the teaching faculty has been a long felt need.

The present book The Essence of Yoga is an endeavor undertaken by a young enthusiastic and talented teacher with lot of pleasure; I place my appreciation on record and wish my dear student Dr. Mangalagowri V Rao, Assistant Professor at the prestigious B.H.U, all success in her bright career.

Preface
Teaching is my profession, patient care is my concern, reading is my passion, writing is an action and this book is an outcome of the combination. Yoga is an ancient science, and also an efficient answer for various ultramodern problems. Yoga aims at liberation from all sorts of miseries. The references can be traced back to early Vedic era. It gradually developed and principles got transformed and got incorporated in basic principles of various religions for the benefit of the society. The practices also got modified according to ability of the people. Earlier time emphasis was more on meditational practices like Dhyana, Samadhi, later period Asana, Pranayama gained much importance and they aided in further progress of an individual in the path of spirituality. Each era had an impact on the Yoga. Present materialist-tic era considers Yoga for therapeutic values rather than spiritual value. Many practice Yoga for health or to counteract a disease.

I personally consider Yoga among one of the promising alternative therapies due to its efficacy and cost effectiveness. Patient care is becoming costlier and diseases are in increasing order, with a shift in the pattern of occurrence of diseases from communicable to non-communicable or lifestyle disorders. The stress is a major shareholder in causation of series of diseases leading to loss in terms of health, money, work hours and ultimately life. The Yoga is the master key for these problems. It acts on multiple facets like stress reduction by inducing relaxation, by activating internal vital organs, by increasing resistance against disease causing factor by immune-modulating effect and giving a feeling of wellbeing. Many chronic problems like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, depression, etc can be very well managed with Yogic practices.

This book is blend of classical as well as modern part of Yoga which can benefit an aspirant who wants to know various aspects of Yoga. This book includes references from Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, religious works along with the texts of Yoga like Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, Hath yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita, Goraksa Samhita, Shiva svarodaya, Shiva Samhita etc. in classical part. The contemporary art includes modern physiological aspects of various Yogic practices, research works and the role of various Yogic practices in common diseases along with brief description about life and works or important personalities related with Yoga.
