Introduction

It is an irony of fate that on this earth on one hand millions do not get enough food and on the other there are many more who besides overeating lead a sedentary life and march towards an untimely death.

In this wonderful world there have been people with wonderful weight records. Robert Hughes an American youth weighed 483 kg sir nothing less than 1062 pounds! When his heart tired of pumping blood to nooks and corners of his large body stopped beating he was only 32 Perry Peal again an American weighed 798 pounds. Her name finds a place even in the world famous Guinness book of world records but Mrs. Priscilla Molef outshines all of them. She weights 1100 pounds. She has to rely upon a lorry as the only mode to transport Vyankat Swami a rice eating poojari of a temple in Tamil Nadu weighed 800 pounds. When he walked light tremors rocked the whole area. More people came for his darshan than for the darshan of the deity. At last the deity got displeased and called him to heaven. At that time he was only 42! Famous rock singer Elvis Presley also died due to obesity at the age of 42.

Obesity is a physical state that causes constant anxiety. It not only shortness the life span of a person but makes his life miserable by causing many grace diseases such as high blood pressure, osteoarthritis and diabetes. Obesity adversely affects a person’s efficiency and prevents him from participating in many activities. Sometimes it causes psychological disorders also. Illnesses and disabilities caused by obesity outnumber all the diseases of vitamin and mineral deficiencies put together.

Obesity is an offshoot of the modern age of machines and materialism. If all the people occupying top positions in various walks of life were to assemble in one place. Wearing a pair of shorts it would present a ludicrous sight. Looking at those rotund figures with sagging bellies and masses of fat deposited at various places on their bodies we would find it difficult to decide whether they are human beings or some funny animals!

This description is not meant to poke fun at the cost of obese persons. It is only an attempt to view the situations objectively and shot the society looks down upon them. When fat persons lose their weight through efforts and make their bodies proportional the whole would looks at them with respect and honor.

Even if there are no apparent difficulties or handicaps in the beginning the fat person should not presume that he is healthy or free from any dangers. The long term dangers of obesity are like a sword hanging over one’s head which can strike any time create numerous difficulties and boundless misery.
