About the Book

“I Have never understood, why the human anatomy and complex body systems, at least at the fundamental level, were neither included nor compiled ever with any published work in herbal medicine? It is my strong conviction that without the basic knowledge of the human body, no system of medicine, including herbalism can accomplish the desired goals.”

“Whenever, I opted to buy a book on herbal medicine, I found nothing but the nomenclature of herbs, their medicinal uses or at the most, the list of compounds they contain. I began asking questions to myself, without knowing about the plants, the environments of their survival, pharmacognosy, biochemistry, biotechnology, thousands of useful compounds, basic needs of human body, dietetics, diseases, possible role of plants in treating of preventing diseases, enzymes, proteins, amino acids, their synthesis and analysis, human anatomy, body systems, metabolism, diagnostic processes and a host of other vital subjects, how I can gain knowledge or offer information to those who wish to study herbal medicine? And as a consequence of this thought, this book has been evolved in its present state.”

“I have tried my best to research and compile the contentst in this book in such a way that the reader is able to know about the subject in its entirety and of course, this has been my sole objective too.”

Preface

There are hundreds of thousands of books available on herbal medicine, herbs, herbal treatments and other Complimentary, Alternative and Integrative Medicine.

Why I chose to author this book? Whenever, I opted to buy a book on herbal medicine, I found nothing but the nomenclature of herbs, their medicinal uses or at the most, the list of compounds they contain. I began asking questions to myself, without knowing about the plants, the environment of their survivals, their photosynthesis process, biochemistry, biotechnology, thousands of useful compounds; basic needs of human body, dietetics, diseases, possible role of plants in treating or preventing such diseases, enzymes, proteins, amino acids, their synthesis and analysis, human anatomy, body systems, metabolism, diagnostic processes and several other vital subjects, how I can gain knowledge or offer information to those who wish to study herbal medicine?

Ironically the 'herbs' or 'herbal medicine' has been looked upon and judged by the conventionalists and the advocates of modern medicine, as only something related to a few kitchen garden herbs like mint, basil, turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon etc.

Customarily, the subjects like biotechnology, biochemistry, pharmacognosy, phytotherapy, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, marine pharmacognosy etc., are being studied at different levels for only the research purposes but no professional in the field, author, researcher or even a doctor ever felt the need to compile all this knowledge in a singal treatise as all these subjects are natural to herbal medicine.

Further I am of the firm opinion that 'Herbal Medicine' cannot act in its complete sense without the knowledge of nutrition and diet. Nutrition is a complete science in itself but again, it is related to plants, herbal medicine, and eventually to the human health.

[ never understood, why the human anatomy and the complex body systems, at least at the fundamental levels, were not included ever with any works in herbal medicine? It is my strong conviction that without the basic knowledge of the human body, no system of medicine can accomplish the desired goals.

There are books and research works available in all the above fields by the greatest of the doctors and the masters of the medicine, but for higher and advanced level studies, that too, for allopath) students only.

I, therefore, perceived that 1 must author a book, giving equal consideration to the subjects relevant to herbalism; just not at the introductory level but moderate enough to carry the subject to the secondary or graduate levels and present a comprehensive idea of herbal ism in its complete sense.

This would be perhaps the first book of its kind on herbal medicine which combines all the possible ingredients of botanical sciences, the science of nutrition and diet, along with the human anatomy and body systems to make it a complete reading.

Last but not the least, in the most humble words, 1 wish to clarity that I am not at all an authority on the subject, but this book can be referred to as a research work than a text book. I have spent about three years researching the contents and matter for this book and I am confident, this book in three parts - Fundamentals of Herbal Medicine, The Science of Nutrition and Diet and the Human Anatomy and Body Systems, will meet the aspirations of the readers at all levels.
