About The Author

Steve McCurry (b.1950) launched hid career as a photojournalist when, disguised in native gard, he crossed the Pakistan border into His coverage won him the Robert Capa gold Medal, which is awarded to photographers who exceptional courage and enterprise.

Famous also for his work in Southeast Asia, McCurry’s photographs are beautiful, uplifting and powerful. McCurry has worked for National Geographic magazine for many years and is a members of the prestigious Magnum agency.

Kerry William Purcell is a writer, lecture, and design historian. His work has appeared in such magazines as Beseline and Eye. His previous books for Phaidon include Alexey Brodovitch (2002) and Weegee (2004).
