Preface

THE SECOND revised edition of this book vol I was brought out in 1969. Since then the changes in this volume have been made at the end under the head Post-scripts in three chapters. The volume 2 of this book was published under the head Social Reconstruction in 1967. The second thoroughly revised edition of volume 2 was brought out under the title "Indian Social Problems" Vol. II under the head Social Work as the scope of Social Reconstruction was found to be wider then contemplated earlier.

The first edition of the book was brought out in 1967 under the title 'Indian Social Problems, Volume II Social Reconstruction'. The second thoroughly revised and enlarged edition was published in 1973 under the title 'Indian Social Problems, Volume II Social Work as the scope of Social Reconstruction was found to be wider than contemplated earlier. To deal with the topic of 'Social Reconstruction' two more additional books were brought out under the titles 'Social Change and Problems of Development in India' and 'Welfare State and Problems of Democratic Planning' in 1971 and 1972 respectively. However some of the problems were still not covered and another book 'India of Tomorrow Problems of Social Reconstruction' was brought out in 1975 to complete this series. When the two books 'Social Change and Problems of Development' and 'Welfare State and Democratic Planning' were revised and enlarged in 1979 and 1984 respectively, their titles were changed as India's Social Transformation, Vol. I Problems of Economic Development' and 'India's Social Transformation, Vol. II Problems of Welfare and Planning' to show their interconnection in a more clear way. The book 'India of Tomorrow' was revised and its second revised edition was brought out in 1985. Thus the revised series was completed in 1985.

In the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth revised editions of the book Indian Social Problems, Volume I and Third, Fourth and Fifth of Volume 2, no changes were made in the text and only two or three additional chapters were added at the end under the head Post Scripts. In the Sixth Revised Edition of Vol. I and Fifth Revised Edition of Vol. II published in (2002), I obtained the assistance from Miss Roli Kulshreshtha who had M.S.W. Degree from Lucknow University in 1996. She cleared her UGC-NET for lectureship examination in 1998, as I was busy in my Voluntary Social Work.

The three additional books to deal with Social Reconstruction which were earlier published under three different heads have now been published in one Volume published under the title "Sociology of Development" (An Indian Perspective) in 2003. In the Seventh Revised Edition of Indian Social Problems Volume I and Sixth of Volume II changes have again been made in the last three chapters under the head Post-script.

The Hindi edition of these three books Indian Social Problems Volume I and Volume II and Sociology of Development (2003) have been published by Vivek Prakashan, 74 A, Jaw ahar Nagar, Delhi-110017.

Two books have recently been published under the head Introduction to Sociology (IIIed.) (2008) and Voluntary Social Organizations of India and Development (A Critical Appraisal) by Allied Publishers, New Delhi.

The Hindi Edition of the book "Introduction to Sociology" has been published under the head Samaj Shastra ke Siddhant (2008) by Radha Publications, Ansari Road, Darya Ganj, New Delhi.

I am grateful to the teachers, students and Voluntary Social Workers who have popularized these books inspite of many short comings. I will be happy to receive comments of the readers in the deficiencies of these books.

Interest has been shown by some teachers of Sociology to bring about some of these books in Regional languages. However the progresses in this respect have been very slow.

The other books published or edited by me in various fields are given under the head "Books Published by the same Author" in this book.

Due to old age I will not be able to revise these books in future. Any Teacher interested in the subject can approach me in this respect.
