In this fully illustrated guide to Life Pulse Massage, Master Mantak Chia and Aisha Sieburth detail abdominal massage practices to open restricted blood vessels, direct blood flow to specific areas for healing, release arterial tension to rebalance high or low blood pressure, and detoxify individual organs and body systems such as the heart, lungs, digestive system, and sexual organs. They show how to clear and activate the master pulses of the navel center and aorta and syn-chronize these master pulses with the 52 pulses of the whole body for optimum circulation and energy balance. In addition to the five-part Life Pulse Massage practice the authors also include a separate Pumping the Pulse practice that can stand alone or be incorporated into the larger massage.
An advanced branch of Chi Nei Tsang abdominal massage, Life Pulse Massage incorporates elements from several traditions including traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Thai medicine, and classical Taoist philosophy. Reflecting these traditions, the massage works on several levels to release physical, emotional, and energetic blockages throughout the body, revitalizing the organs, and setting the stage for optimum health.
Mantak Chai was born in Thailand to Chinese parents in 1944. When he was six years old, he learned from Buddhist monks how to sit and "still the mind." While in grammar school he learned traditional Thai boxing, and he soon went on to acquire considerable skill in aikido, yoga, and Tai Chi. His studies of the Taoist way of life began in earnest when he was a student in Hong Kong, ultimately leading to his mastery of a wide variety of esoteric disciplines, with the guidance of several masters, including Master I Yun, Master Meugi, Master Cheng Yao Lun, and Master Pan Yu. To better understand the mechanisms behind healing energy, he also studied Western anatomy and medical sciences.
Master Chia has taught his system of healing and energizing practices to tens of thousands of students and trained more than two thousand instructors and practitioners throughout the world. He has established centers for Taoist study and training in many countries around the globe. In June of 1990, he was honored by the International Congress of Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong (Chi Kung), which named him the Qi Gong Master of the Year.

This global body treatment releases arterial tension to rebalance high or low blood pressure, flushes toxins, opens restricted blood vessels, nid increases blood and chi flow through the entire vascular system and die organs. Working with the fluid form of blood as a vehicle of our vital many, Life Pulse Massage restores and harmonizes optimum cardiovascular circulation for better overall health. The work also harmonizes the Kibde balances of spirit and matter in the body, calming the heart and mind and opening a deeper connection with the inner self.
Blood and chi are the fundamental circulating energies in the body. Their edition and movement form the theoretical and practical basis for all of the Chinese healing arts. Blood and chi flow side by side throughout zit body wherever energy channels and blood vessels parallel one another.
A famous saying captures their relationship: "When the chi moves, the blood flows; if the chi stagnates, the blood congeals."
Blood is a very dense form of chi that is created from a combination of chi energy from the food we eat, Prenatal Chi or original force, and chi from the air we breathe. The course and functions of blood have been well charted by modern medicine: arterial blood carries nutriments, oxygen, and nutritious chi to all the body's cells; venous blood, having given up its nutrition and oxygen to the tissues, is returning to the heart carrying carbon dioxide to be eliminated through the lungs (fig. I.1). Blood also carries a strong symbolic charge, intimately associated with life and death. Essential to every existence, the symbolic meaning of blood has been mingled throughout history with that of family lineage, blood ties, cultural ritual, philosophy, and of course medicine. From the sacrifices executed in many traditions to cultural rites of passage and the cure of bleeding in medicine, blood retains a power of purity or impurity. In popular language, many expressions relate the importance of blood.
Blood is animated with its own intelligence. At once essence and existence, it shows us where sickness begins and also brings the necessary elements of healing to where they are needed. Observing and working with its vital flow permits the body's pharmacy to play its role. A healthy pulse creates optimum blood flow and is a fundamental element to good health. Life Pulse Massage is a healing therapy focusing on releasing, activating, and harmonizing blood flow to clean, nourish, and regenerate the tissues and the organs of the body.
Chi is the motor force in blood, making it lively and energetic, and supplying the power that allows it to course through the body (fig. 1.2). Blood and chi have tremendous healing power when they are full of nutrition and energy and can flow naturally and abundantly throughout the body. Problems arise with both vital energies when they are energy deficient, too hot, too cold, stagnant, or not moving forcefully enough. Life Pulse Massage is a powerful treatment for regulating these two energies as they work together.
Why Blood Slows Down
Many factors can interfere with blood flow, including the following:
• Physical obstructions in the blood vessels. These can include plaques, toxins, bacteria, viruses, blood clots, stenos is, thrombosis, etc.
• Structural constrictions of the fasciae, tissues, nerves, and/or muscular lining of the vessels. Such constrictions arise most often from tension due to stress.
• Imbalance of the autonomic nervous system, provoking high or low blood pressure.
Life Pulse Massage clears mechanical blockages, releasing toxins and emotional charges. It also flushes the blood, increasing blood and chi flow to the organs and tissues for optimum health. Finally, Life Pulse Massage balances and synchronizes the pulses and blood pressure, harmonizing emotions.
