Book Description
From the Book

Meandering Pastures of Memories is a fascinating tale of determination. Achievement. Insight and sincerity. The pastures of memories cover activities of Shovana Narayan. The protagonist. Which provide a vast. Multi-hued and multi-dimensional panorama that has subtly influenced her life and the society as a whole. It subtly reveals the dawn of a new era of dance reflecting humanity, harmony, feminism, dignity, dialogue and concern for global peace. Through the medium of dance, there is an unending dialogue between the self and dance as well as between the world and individual.

The volume brings her out as a 'citizen of the world', rooted in tradition yet keeping the windows and doors of her mind always open so as to inhale the fragrance of myriad cultures. Inspired by Indian philosophical and religious texts, yet her life has borne the stamp of harmonization of cultures across the globe. Her actions and thoughts speak volumes of her passionate love for her motherland and humanity. Yet the pragmatic in her surfaces to reveal that she is not blind to imperfections.

The volume has been divided aptly into four parts. The first part that deals with her growing years is devoted to her passion and pursuit of dance. This provides a glimpse into the social mood and concerns of society from the fifties to the seventies. The second part of the volume dedicates itself to the role played by her parents and family in her life, providing an insight into the developmental stages, economic and political, of young India. The third section deals with her marriage and motherhood, which is an honest account of her fears and expectations. This section also shows her keen sense of observation for it is rich in visual details of her travelogues of her 'gypsy life' with a diplomat. Finally, the fourth section that dwells on her personal musings provides a most fascinating glimpse of the real 'Shovana', the thinker, the researcher, the scholar, the humanist and the social activist.

Preface

Every individual is endowed with multiple characters, multiple identities and facets. In respective journeys of life, each one of us though seems to meander from one facet to another, yet there is a latent string of continuity namely that of an eternal quest. At this phase of life, one does not know how long is the remaining journey to the infinite sea where one can lie down and nestle in its bosom. Beginning with a somber journey through the bubbliness of childhood the river of life steers its way serenely through many valleys. On encountering boulders on the way, sometimes it spreads mirthful sprays in an apparent bid to cloak revealing thoughts, and sometimes it allows itself to slide down gently allowing visibility to the troubling boulders. It inhales the fragrance of meadows, it carries salts and minerals and it witnesses joys and sorrows. In turn, it provides solace, comfort and life-giving water. It traverses through joys of adulthood, expectant parenthood and of growing maturity. However, one thing is certain that the experiences the river gathers while traversing through various terrains while winding its way through various pastures are enriching. It witnesses changing times and changing ethos for the journey is eternal…
