Book Description
About The Book

Born in 1898, Parasmani Pradhan began his long, steady, relentless struggle for the development, diffusion and due recognition of the Nepali language in India. From having Nepali recognised as a vernacular and medium of instruction in the Primary through Middle to the High Schools in the district of Darjeeling: as a subject of study at the College and University level; as the Official Language of the three Hill Sub-Divisions of Darjeeling district: its recognition by the Sahitya Akademi and ultimately to its recognition by the Government of India as one of the major languages of the Indian Union, he worked relentlessly for nearly 70 years till the very day of his death in 1986.

Apart from being an essayist, a grammarian, a lexicographer, linguist, poet, playwright, an editor and educationist, he was also a keen social reformer and directed all his efforts for progressive changes in our society.

About The Author

INDRAMANI PRADHAN, the author of this monograph, is the sixth son of Sri Parasmani Pradhan. He is an M.A. in English from Visva Bharati University, an M.Ed. from Allahabad University, D.T.E.F.L. from London University and an ex-Professor of the Institute of English, Calcutta. In this monograph, Indramani Pradhan has recorded a short sketch of his father's life centred around his struggle for the development and recognition of the Nepali language in India, which was, in fact, the story of his life. The author has also touched briefly upon other facets of his father's life which bring out his strong character and personality, his versatile interests and his full and active life.
