Book Description

About the Book

This is the first compact comprehensive and complete Vedic Grammar, comprising both the Vaidiki Prakriya and the Svara Prakriya, in one full chapter – the eighth one – of an exhaustive Sanskrit Grammar, entitled the Sarasvati-Kanthabharana-vyakarana, traditionally known to have been authored by the celebrated Emperor Bhojadev Parmar of Dhara (11th Cent. A.D.) and consisting of eight chapters divided into four quarters each. The original work is in the form of the sutras, which were commented upon by two commentators, out of which the commentary of only one has been partly published so far. But there is no commentary so far noticed on the eight chapter treating the Vedic grammar. The work is sort of an up to date recasting of the Paninian tradition, with suitable modifications in the sutras and their placement in the system in the structural frame.

The eighth chapter, presented here, contains four quarters, the first two of them covering the Vaidiki Prakriya, and the rest of them the Svara Prakriya. The text of the sutras has been critically edited, in the light of their comparative study with the Paninian tradition as preserved in the Astadhyayi, Varttikas, Mahabhasya, kasika, Padamanjari and Nyasa. Each sutra has been briefly explained in Sanskrit and Gujarati, and all the illustrations are fully elaborated in the light of the sutra concerned.

Preface

It is for the first time that we are publishing a well-knit compact Vedic Sanskrit Grammar composed in the IIth century A.D. The Original aphorisms of this work actually form the last chapter of a comprehensive work of Sanskrit Grammar comprising eight chapters, well know to have been composed by the celebrated Emperor Bhojadev Paramar of Dhara. Dr. Narayan Kansara, the Director of the Maharshi Academy of Vedic Sciences, Ahmedabad, has critically edited the sutras, compiled the Sanskrit and Gujarati explanations, and collated as also elucidated the illustrations. I should like to place on record my thankfulness to Shri Ishwarbhai Patel, the Former Vice Chancellor of three universities in Gujarat and President of the management of the Maharshi Academy of Vedic Sciences, who had brought this work to my notice. We have no doubt that this work will prove very useful to the Vedic Students. We are happy to publish it on behalf of the Pratishthan.
