His Holiness Jagadguru Sankaracarya
Swami Sri Swarupananda Sarasvati Ji Maharaja

He is the incarnation of Adi Sankaracarya. At the age of nine he left his home in search of truth. He is eighty-two years old and the Sankaracarya of two seats, in the west and the north of India.

This is an excerpt from one of his speeches. This speech is about the realization of God being the ultimate goal in life.

"There is a sense of emptiness or lacking in our soul because we have forgotten our relationship with God. Instead, our physical body, senses and mind have all become absorbed in attaining physical and material pleasures. Only human beings are endowed with the intelligence that is capable of experiencing the manifestation of God. Therefore, we must dedicate our lives to devotional practice.

"Seek the Lord, praise the Lord and worship the Lord"

Foreword

Of all the stotrams or hymns written by Adi Sankaracharya, Bhaja Govindam stands alone for its direct appeal to each and everyone of us. It is an appeal to our minds and hearts to wake from this dream which we call life. It enjoins us to recognize the fruitless search for meaning in our actions, our deep-held belief in the apparent connection of events, our vain actions and attachment to family, friends, religious rituals and vows, and the empty hopes which fill our lives with false happiness, leading us to actions which only perpetuate the eternal cycle of birth and death.

What does Adi Shankaracharya suggest we do to stop this endless round of suffering? Firstly we must ask ourselves "Who am I?", and the corollaries "Who are all these people?" and "Where do I come from?" We are enjoined to ponder deeply on these things. But how to wake up from this earthly dream, of this creation with all its constant enticements? The company of the good people, he says. Worship the Lord as your own Self. Be content to just let your past karmas play out, and remain the witness of all your actions. Remain ever watchful of the delusions of your mind. It is the Lord alone who dwells in your heart, who speaks and acts for you. Know this to be true! See yourself in everyone. Remember who you really are. To help us further, Adi Shankaracharya exhorts us to read the scriptures, to prefer the good company of holy persons, to practice discernment and dispassion, to still inward activity, and to ever worship the Lord. Cherish your ideal, be it your Guru or your heart's ideals, and break the bonds of attachment to this world. Strive with all your might to see the Lord in your own heart.

This beautiful rendition by Manjula Sudhindra Rao reflects so well the inner spirit and message of Bhaja Govindam by Adi Shankaracharya, as relevant today as when it was first composed.

Back of the Book

The whole of Sankara's philosophy can be summarized in a line :

'Brahma satyam jagan-mithya jivo brahmaiva na parah'.

'Brahman, the absolute, alone is real; this world is unreal (maya) and the jiva or the individual soul is not different from Brahman.
