Foreword

It is indeed a pleasure to respond to the request of my young friend Shri Niranjan Babu to write a foreword to his forthcoming book on Vastu, consisting of his answers to questions posed before him. Shri Babu is an heir to a great tradition, not only the comprehensive cultural tradition of India but to the more specific tradition of Indian astrology crystallized remarkably by his own father. It is no small benefit to be a son to a giant like Dr. B.V. Raman, for whom I had reverential regard and who lifted Indian astrology from the conservative morass and provided a thoroughly modern relevance to it. Shri Niranjan Babu has continued in his great father’s mission to secure a place of honour for astrological thinking in the commonwealth of scientific, philosophical and spiritual disciplines. He has extended the scope of traditional astrology by involving astrological considerations in matters of engineering and architecture. His counsels with regard to the structural and functional stylization of modern buildings are being eagerly sought by builders and owners.

Shri Niranjan Babu, who is continuing the work of his celebrated father, is an expert in building a bridge between tradition and modernity. Indian astrology has, as is well known, a horary antiquity and its association with Veda as an accessory (vedanga) also is well known. It is true that jyotisha as a vedanga (especially of the Lagadha tradition), was more in the nature of muhurta-jyautisha than that of phala-jyautisha (predictive astrology).

But it must not be forgotten that the six vedangas are inter-related and mutually complementary. Jyautisha was naturally related, rather intimately, with kalpa (ritualistic digest), of which the sulba sutras were a natural and necessary outpourins. Sulbha-sutras deal with construction of altars and other spatial details of a sacrificial session They are, in other words, earliest guidebooks of engineering and architecture. Sulba-sutras and vastu-vidya are flowers and fruit respectively (pushpa-phala). The measurements and the orientations have their own symbolic and spiritual significance; they made the rituals ‘adamantine’ (vajra).

Unfortunately, this aspect of karma-kanda in course of time receded to the background, and almost disappeared. In recent years, the charlatans are exploiting the mystery of the Vastu as well as the gullibility of the people. The popular Vastu is altogether devoid of textual tradition and is not supported by Agama. And it completely ignores the principles and practices of architecture, whether Indian or non-Indian. It is thus causing more harm than good to the people who want to play safe (naturally enough).

In contrast to this trend, it is with pleasure that we find in Shri Niranjan Babu a Vastu-writer who relies almost exclusively on Agama texts like Brihat Samhita, Stana Sara, Mayamata and SamaranganaSutradhara. His earlier books (Vastu: Relevance to Modern Times and Handbook of Vastu) have demonstrated not only his acquaintance with the textual tradition but his skill in translating theoretical postulates into practical counsels. The author’s eye for the relevance to modern times is discernible in his writings. He has equal respect for the scriptural tradition and for the contemporary scientific and technological configuration. He has the competence to provide the proper astrological background to his Vastu suggestions. He seeks to justify the view, which his father held, that Vastu is an extension of jyautisha.

The present monograph from his pen is in the nature of answers to the problems raised by intelligent and honest inquirers who have an open mind with regard to Vastu. There are now two classes of such inquirers; those who totally reject Vastu as something unscientific, irrational and superstitious; and those who are credulous and therefore ready to devour everything that a professional Vastu practitioner prescribes. Proper approach to the subject requires a third class of inquiry which involves discrimination, caution, suspended judgement and search for satisfaction. The problems raised by this class of inquirers are valid and worthy of consideration.

. In answer to a question, Shri Niranjan Babu rightly points out that the discipline of Vastu is not to be confined to architecture; it has a vaster framework, inclusive of astronomy, geography and cosmology. This is what makes Vastu a mystery, for there are influencing factors which are normally out of our comprehension, beyond our normal ken, and outside our common-sense which has been systematised as science. In fact, Vastu in Indian textual tradition is not just measurements or planning. The expression Vastu-Vinyasa involves designing, organizing, configurating. In modern vocabulary, it is synonymous with Gestalting. It is a harmonious fusion of several aspects, details and dimensions. The prefix VI’ in the word vinyasa signifies an especial effort in the direction of ‘placement’ (nyasa), viz., putting together meaningfully several factors and making one unit out of several details (from the root ‘as’ which means ‘kshepane’, distribution, organization).

This suggests a creativity in the process of Vastu planning or predictions. Intuition becomes more important than intelligence on the part of the Vastu professional. And intuition is something which is not acquired by effort but is an endowment from forces beyond our reach. To be the proper recipient of this endowment, one needs to have an interior which is pure and potent enough to reflect the grace from the higher powers. What Brihat Samhita says with regard to the understanding of the Mantra applies equally well here.

“The Mantra does not reveal itself to one who is not himself a sage (seer). The sage is one who has the ability to see what is beyond the normal vision of all of us. He is described as the perceiver of the beyond (kranta-darsi). And this perception comes out of the discipline which is ingrained in him; he has rendered his mind perfectly transparent and translucent by the penances and austerities he engages himself in. Things normally invisible become for his visible; what is ordinarily inaccessible become easy of access to him. Correct calculations, insightful understanding of the relevant details and their interrelationships, resourceful predictions and constructive suggestions are possible only in such contexts. A close scrutiny of the textual principles helps one to develop insights; a disciplined life helps one to receive the intuitive intimations. Astrology as an art is based on these prerequisites, as also Vastu for prediction and counselling.

The endeavour of my young friend, Shri Niranjan Babu, to place Vastu on the solid foundations of textual tradition is a laudable one. I wish him success in this enterprise. His books on Vastu, including the present one, are welcome contributions in a field filled with quacks and charlatans; they herald a stage of honest inquiry into and mature reflection on problems concerning Vastu.

Preface

It gives me immense pleasure to present my readers Vastu FAQs Answered.

In 1995 my revered father, Dr. B. V. Raman, Founder-Editor of The Astrological Magazine (1936-1998), conducted the First All India Symposium on Vastu. Eminent speakers from all over India set the ball of Vastu awareness rolling. Today, Vastu is gaining global significance. Buildings are being constructed and/or modified on Vastu principles with good results.

In this book, I have endeavoured to answer queries on various aspects of Vastu that have been put to me from around the globe by my clients, students and readers. Some of them have appeared in the columns of The Astrological Magazine. I hope that this book of mine will motivate the people of the world to make use of this ancient science of architecture and help them to live a life of health, happiness and contentment

The esteemed public received my earlier books well and I am confident the readers will find this book interesting and receive it with the same enthusiasm. In this book I have tried to answer the Vastu queries interfacing ancient wisdom with modern requirements.

My study and research in Vastu have been absolutely due to the encouragement and guidance of my revered parents and Mrs. Rajeswari Raman (Director, Sri Surya Prakash Institute of Yoga for Women, Bangalore, India).

I acknowledge my wife Umarani’s’ and my children’s (Raman Suprajarama and Raman Siddhartha) encouragement, assistance and enthusiastic support and providing me the necessary impetus and energy needed in my writings over the years.

I convey my thanks to quite a few friends whose suggestions have eiped me in the writing of this book. I thank the staff of Raman Publications, Bangalore, for their assistance in data entry, typesetting and proofreading this book

I also express my thanks to UBS Publishers’ Distributors Pvt. Ltd., 1’ having produced this book attractively and expeditiously.
