About Ghazal Ghazal is a poetic form consisting of couples with a rhyme and a refrain where each line shares the same poetic metre. This form is considered to have originated from ancient Persian verses in the 10th century. Ghazal can also be defined as a collection of sher-s which is a poem of two lines. A sher is a combination of ‘Beher’, ‘Radif’, ‘Kaafiyaa’, ‘Matla’ and Maqta’
Beher - It is the Metre or the length of the sher thus all the sher-s in a ghazal must be of the same beher.
Radif - In a ghazal the second line of all the sher-s ends with the same set of words. This repetition of common words is the radif of the ghazal.
Kaafiyaa - Kaafiyaa is the rhyming pattern, which all the words before radif should have.
Matla - The First sher in the ghazal has radif in both the lines. This sher is called the matla of the ghazal. There can be more than one matla in a ghazal. In such a case the second one is called Matla-e-saani or Husn-e-matla.
Maqta - A Shayar (a poet who writes the sher) usually has an alias name which he uses in a sher towards the end of a ghazal. This last sher of a ghazal is known as the maqta.
