In this 50-minute profile director Nasreen Munni Kabir travels to Benaras to explore the life, work and unique personality of acclaimed classical musician Bismillah Khan who sadly passed away in the year 2006. His sophisticated and brilliantly graceful style has elevated the shenai, a folk instrument to the concert stage.

This documentary made in 2002 has the world-class performer Bismillah Khan look back at his amazing career with humour, humility and spirituality. He has performed in concerts across the globe and has the singular distinction of being asked to perform on the eve of India’s independence in 1947.

Featuring an in-depth interview and exclusive concert footage filmed in Khan Saaheb’s family home in Benaras, “Bismillah of Benaras,” originally produced for BBC Television, U.K, charts Bismillah Khan’s history from his formative years as a student of his uncle and guru, Ali Bux, to his status as one of the most highly regarded classical performance in India. With contributions from musicologist Sandeep Bagchee on the Indian classical music tradition, and Shashank N. Singh on the role of the shehnai in the life of Benaras, this gentle profile provides an insightful look at a man of Faith and music, who at the age of 86, reminds us that musicians like Bismillah Khan come only once in a lifetime.
