Sheikh Farid-Ud-Din Maund the earliest Sufi poet for Punjab was born in 1173 AD at a place called Khotwal in multan of the pre-partition Punjab. A great Sufi saint whose hymns have been included in the Sikh scriptures his sweetness of language and simplicity of expression account for his mass appeal. The thought content of his poetry has touched the greatest heights of ecstasy humility meditation and asceticism.

Farid was to Punjabi what Chaucer was to English. He made Punjabi poetry and poetry Punjabi. He spoke of his people in the people’s dialeet and asked them to use Punjabi for religious purpose. For his sweet words sweet ideals and sweet behaviour Farid became known as Ganj-e-Shankar the epitome of sweetness.

Farid’s poetry’s has for its general content man’s love of God often using the conjugal parallel. One finds vivid depiction of spiritual experiences which he narrates in an easy manner using sensual imagery as well as symbols and metaphors derived form everyday life. Being a scholar he chooses his vocabulary very carefully and uses words and objects that are familiar to the reader. Yet his poetry is full of philosophical thought that is deep and laden with Islamic terminology.

Wadali Brothers

Puranchand and Pyarelal wadali the well –known singers form Punjab popularly known as the Wadali Brothers are today one of the finest and most popular exponents of sufi music. They have contributes years of efforts to the spiritual folklore of India and have given voice to the banis of great Sufi saints very soulfully.

They hail from Guru Ki Wadali the village of the fifth guru Arjan Das. This may be the reason why their family was strongly influenced by the banis of the great Sufi saints. The brothers received their initial training form their father Thakur Das. Later they trained in the art of gayaki form Durga Das and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of Patiala Gharana.

Puranchand and Pyarelal Wadali have a diverse repertoire excel in singing Sufiana qalaam by Baba Farid as well as other Sufi and Bhakti saints. Their music is an offering to the divine and they get immense pleasure and ecstasy in praising the Lord through their devotional music which they have acquired form the rich traditions of Punjab.
