Somewhere in a city exists a small lane, known only to a selected few and here is practiced the oldest profession in the world. It is here, that on a lonely evening, a young man can find a little warmth and companionship and an older person gets a refreshing change from the routine of his office, pestering wife, and screaming children. For generations this place has existed unchanged – the girls, their “Managers” and the policemen – one happy family. In this lane and in this strange world enters one day a freak: a Nagpur-born, down-to-earth, honest policeman: constable Rattan, who knows the law book the way a high priest knows the Ramayana. He launches a crusade against this strange but illegal society and winds up on his backside-thrown out of the police force. His feet trace back the path to that lane once again, and this time the girls give him a real bad time. He tales refuge in a café – “Dhoop Chhaon Café” run by a colourful character dhoop chhaon. He also meets a girl Nisha. The simple Rattan is so overpowered and bullied by this high spirited, free loving Nisha that he unwillingly winds up as her “Business Manager”. But the thought of letting a girl work for him whilst he sat about doing nothing does not appeal to him, and he works out a master plan which would make Nisha think that she was earning whilst actually it is him all the time. But the master plan misfires and this leads from one hilarious sequence to another, until the matter reaches a point where he has to kill himself in order to marry her.! “Manoranjan” means fun, laughter and terrific entertainment. It provides all these in plenty. It also serves as a sugarcoated pill for curing one of the gravest and oldest social problems and shows in its own funny way, the way to rid us of it. After all, laughter is the best medicine and MANORANJAN promises a belly-ache of laughs.
