About The Audio CD

Vintage 78 RPM Records is a collection of classical vintage recordings featuring doyens of Hindustani Classical vocal and instrumental music, which go as far back as to the 1930s and ‘40s and are typically pieces of three to four minutes. Recorded exclusively with HMV (over 100 years old music company) now popularly known as Saregama. There is a ample evidence that all the artistes chosen in the series had developed, each in his/her own way, a brilliant technique to encapsulate in a very short space the golden peaks of vitality and exuberance of classical music. It is for the very first time that for the connoisseurs of classical music exclusive 78 RPM recordings are being made available on CDs.

Pandit Sawai Gandharva (1886 – 1952)
Pt. Rambhau Kundgolkar born in 1886 in Kundgol (now in Karnataka) was a Dhrupad Dhamar artiste and was also associated as a singer-Actor with the legendary Marathi Musical Theatre. Sawai Gandharva was trained by Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of Kirana Gharana. Panditji was also guided by Ustad Nasir Hussain Khan of Gwalior Gharana and Pt. Bhaskarbuwa Bakhle. Systematic elaboration of ragas was his forte. He excelled in Raga Sangeet, Natya Sangeet and Bhajans. Besides being a very good Performer, he was a Great Guru of Great Disciples like Dr. Gangubai Hangal, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Firoz Dastur, Pt. Kagalkar Buwa and Smt. Indirabai Khadilkar were groomed by Pt. Sawai Gandharva. Pt. Sawai Gandharva left for heavenly abode on 12 September 1952 in Pune.
