Jahangir's reign saw his desire for western pictures and engravings and his acquisitions were carefully studied by artists in order to create innovative works. He was also eager to depict maulavis and ascetics as part of his artistic pursuits.

This painting of an old man is inspired by European models. What is outstanding about the painting is that the artist has a remarkably fluid line. He prefers subtle details to bold effects. Painted against a black background, the man's face is the key part for the calm and inner peace that it radiates. The eyes do not look towards the viewer, yet attract his/her gaze. The grey beard and eyebrows lend serenity and wisdom that come only with age. The grey shawl and the turban are shaded in tones of silver and steel grey in a manner that gives volume and provides texture. He wears a string of the same beads as that of the rosary in his neck. He is counting the beads as he walks on. The body is modelled perfectly and the shading is used to gain an effect of muscle and tissues. The old body bent with age, yet moving with the aid of a stick, tells a tale of determination and grit.

The background is pitch dark but the foreground has firm ground with shrubs and flowering plants. The plant show an astounding minute attention towards detail.
