In Mithila, the elephant is considered a symbol of a successful pregnancy and it is believed that any pregnant woman who dreams of an elephant can expect her child to have an exceptional destiny. Not only is the elephant a symbol of fertility but is also the symbol of the macrocosm, of the beginning and the end. Keeping the above context in mind, the artist has painted a baby elephant in the womb of the mother elephant. She paints not what she sees but what she knows. The two elephants painted in earthy colours are caparisoned and decorated with jewellery and bells. Their bodies are painted with floral and geometric designs. The eyes are big and prominent. The colour and pattern of both the pachyderms may be different but there has to be some similarity in order to define relation . Hence the similar over cloth with a lotus medallion.
The decorative style of Mithila art abhors empty spaces. It is filled up with familiar details which suddenly seem to take on life and power. The colours and patterns blend and clash at the same time making it commendable.
