"Heavy winds are blowing everywhere. In such a season only a person of weak sense will go out leaving his beloved and house. Even the traveling sages give up their wanderings. Not only humans but even birds remain in their nests. Sri Vishnu with goddess Lakshmi goes to rest. Anyone leaving home in the month of Ashadha is unheard of."

The young Nayika urges her Nayaka to be at home, narrating to him the condition of the world outside, in the month of Ashadha or June-July. They sit in a grove of mango trees, near a fountain that nourishes a bed of flowers. In the background of this Baramasa painting, the artist has used earthy colors and strokes of the brush to delineate tornado-like winds, highlighting the ravages of heat.

Baramasa in Indian art tradition refers to a custom of painting the twelve seasons, with Nayaka-Nayika in the center of the canvas, juxtaposing the moods of the human heart with the condition of seasons in nature.
