When mighty streams dry or turn into thin stripes of water, all five elements – air, water, sky, earth and fire, of which the body of a living being is constituted, melt and transform into just one of them – the fire, scorching and burning everything, when roads get deserted, tanks and reservoirs ovens-like parch and seeing this even wild elephants subdue and pacify, poisonous cobra and dreaded lions stay indoors seeking respite from the heat, the mighty creatures of the earth become feeble, and the whole world turns restless in want of water and a soothing breeze, one should realise that the month of Jyeshtha has arrived. In the month of Jyeshtha poets like Keshavadas advise wise ones to stay inside and enjoy the moments in love games. This is how the month of Jyeshtha, the third month in the Indian calendar corresponding to May/June of international calendar, has been usually visualised in verses and miniatures.

This folio, rendered in the Jodhpur style of Rajasthani painting prevalent around the mid-eighteenth century, has on its top a parching fire-emitting sun the heat and the brightness of which is seen scattered all over. Not merely deer and other minor animals but even elephants and lions are seen seeking shelter under trees and birds, aquatic and other, are unwilling to come out of the pond or leave their tree-resorts. Strangely, the lion like the baby elephant is seeking shelter under the elephant’s huge body and almost always battling for gaining supremacy the two recline in utmost friendliness. With huge boulders surfacing the stream suggest that it has largely dried. In the palace courtyard all fountains are put on to cool the winds reaching the pavilion where the royal lovers are engaged in the sport of love.
