Also known as the Indian White-backed Vulture, this is a heavy, dirty blackish brown vulture with scrawny, naked head and neck. At rest (and while banking in the air), the white back is diagnostic.

The Bengal Vulture is locally common in parts of India and Southeast Asia, and prefers relatively wet habitats. It will enter towns and villages, and thus can take advantage of garbage, slaughterhouse refuge and the like. Its nesting colonies are situated in villages or along rivers or canals.
