The Mughal emperors were keenly interested in the study of flora and fauna, which gave an impetus to the artist to portray pictures on natural history, a phenomenon that never occurred before in Indian art.

It is mind boggling to see and observe what is possible when a zoological or botanical artist combined artistic talent with close observation of nature. This butterfly cannot be confused with any other species because of its uniformly gray, nearly black wings. The hind wings have a pattern resembling bat wings and the remainder of the pattern varies from left to right. What are common to both the upper wings are irregular white spots at the tip. The males of this species have special scales on their wings termed androconia or scent pods. They secrete on odour apparently attractive to the females. This butterfly flies in a rapid zigzag fashion and it is not easy to capture. Enlargement of the figure in proposition to the flowering plant is conscious and the artists special way of according dignity to the main subject of his painting.

The leaf that forms the base of this painting is ample proof that it has seen many a summer. Calligraphic text above and below the painting has neat boxes painted in gold with black letterings that make the illustration sumptuous.
