Stone has always been the basic material for some of the most beautiful embellishments, combining the skills of the stone-cutter, the calligrapher, inlay worker, mosaic etc. During the Mughal period, the styles and themes introduced new trends in the relief work and traceries on stone. The accent on choice floral patterns is heightened by the equipose of fragile subject and delicacy of the technique. Indian master craftsmen used every ingenuity to adapt the many spring flowers of Persian inspiration to suit particular needs so that the ornamentation took on an enduring Indian character.

Marble lends itself especially well to the delicate craftsmanship of screen and inlay work. Flowers are carved on raised patterns and poised with their leaves and buds on delicate stems to decorate this marble plate in an elegant manner. Carved floral sprays in delicate conventionalized flowers, bordered by a continuous floral pattern of curving stems and leaves is delicately inlaid in bright colors and gold paint. The pattern glistens and sets an imprint of sparkle that brings both design and setting to their ultimate peak and inspire all with a sense of admiration.

The harmonious blending of colors, the Persian style of conventionalized forms of flowers and leaves and curling stems and the smooth effect of this type of decoration becomes a fine art and the whole effect on this marble plate is lucent and impelling.
