Buddha's left palm lies open in his lap (dhyana mudra), and the right displays the vitarka mudra. The dhyana is the posture of meditation and contemplation, while the vitarka is a gesture which signifies the explanation of the teachings of the Dharma.

Buddha 's face has a calm serenity. This the artist has achieved in a unique manner. Though he has shown Buddha's eyes partially open, they are devoid of eyeballs. This almost gives a feminine charm to Buddha's face. The same is achieved by his thin, tightly pursed lips. The elongated earlobes form a typical part of Buddha's iconography, and reveal his once royal status when he wore heavy ear ornaments, under the weight of which, his ears got stretched.

Batik is a tedious process since only one color can be applied at a single instant. Here by using several colors in a rich harmony, the artist reveals his virtuosity and complete mastery over the medium.
