The beauty of the painting lies in its mysterious element. At first sight, the painting seems like a mish-mash of colour and media. It prods you to unravel what lies behind them. Gradually, the outline of a woman emerges. It alerts your keen senses to discover more. In the process, it becomes an exercise, involving not just your visual perception. She cradles a baby in her arms. Suddenly, the canvas is infused with maternal feelings and a bond that only a mother and her child share. She is seated in a way to make the child comfortable; holds him in her arms protectively; close to her bosom to provide him that necessary emotional security.
The background, using oil based colours, is basically blocks of hues merging with each other harmoniously. A flat, monochromatic background would have diminished the enigma that the artist has tried to project. The outline of the lady uses a different, varnished medium that sets it apart from the background.
The painting is emotive, aesthetic and experimental at the same time. It reveals all, but slowly, enticingly, till you fall in love with the artwork.
