Dance, in many cultures, is a form of prayer which creates a heightened consciousness and elicits energies that call forth the divinity within the self.

This image of Ganesha in three quarter profile shows him dancing on his vehicle, the mouse. His stance is reminiscent of his father's dancing posture. Ganesha here has six arms, holding various attributes, but his lower left hand is not bereft of modaka, his favourite sweet, which, till date, his devotees offer him in the ritual worship. He wears an exquisite crown with a frill of beads hanging down and a parasol above.

The colours used in the image range from ochre to brown with a fair sprinkling of white. To achieve the effect this work has, the artist must have put in extreme effort. The background, barring Ganesha's image, would have been treated to a liberal layer of wax, while the image was being dipped; and the vice versa procedure. Batik as an art form involves a number of waxings and dyeing. For the final, extraordinary effect, there is the black crushed line all over.
