The process by which thought is transformed into speech is equated with the process of cosmic manifestation through which Shiva is believed to give birth to the universe. This process is said to take place in five stages, these are:

1). Joy (ananda)
2). Knowledge (vigyana)
3). Thought (mana)
4). Life-Breath (prana) and
5). Physical-life

These five elements of cosmic manifestation are represented in visual arts through the five heads of Shiva.

His ten arms signify the ten directions, symbolizing that Shiva's grace extends over all space.

Here Shiva is seen seated atop a full-blown red lotus, arising from the primordial waters. He sits in his typical ascetic posture with a snake necklace around his neck, and five hooded cobras crowning his five heads. He wears the Shaivite tilak on his foreheads, and each of his heads has a third eye which represents his power to view the future also as against us ordinary mortals who can see only the past and the present.
