Mughal art broke new grounds in the use and representation of the floral motif in painting. Botanical drawings of exquisite beauty were prepared at the behest of emperor patrons who loved nature as much as they loved art and hence combined the two to produce fantastic results such as this painting.

These meticulously drawn flowers in a variety of arrangement are flawless in depiction. One of the very striking compositional element are the flowers projecting different facets at different angles. Leaves form a natural frame to enclose the cluster of flowers and are arranged in a manner that shows delicacy of rhythm and balance. Various shades of green have been used in depicting the leaves in order to impart realism to the study. The tender petals and lively leaves suggest careful rendering of the pigment, applied thinly. The shading is equally delicate. The stamens in some flowers are clearly shown with the help of fine lines and in the others, those with a frontal view, the artist has painted a circle depicting stamens.

The shading in the petals is denser and brighter towards the inside and in a lighter shade around the edges; a technique that helps in giving volume to the flowers. Line has been sacrificed at the altar of color and shading adeptness.
