Tanjore art comprises of spiritual-themed paintings with a royal heritage. Having evolved in the tenure of the art-loving Chola dynasty rulers, today it is a prestigious Geographical Indicator and is considered as the greatest traditional art form of India. The painting you see on this page has been made using traditional colours, semi-precious stones, and 24 K gold leaf work that are the hallmark of the gracious Tanjore painting. While Lord Krishna is a favourite with painters of this medium, themes that convey heartfelt devotion are to be spotted in abundance.
It is an extraordinary confluence of both art and craft. The beautiful Devi Lakshmi is seated in lalitasana on a bed of pink lotus petals, upon a pedestal of gold. She is flanked by two pristine, richly adorned elephants, their trunks raised in adulation. From the gorgeous crown on Her head (which is one of the most complex aspects of the painting) to the rest of Her shringar and Her saree, Her splendid appearance befits the divine presider over resources and wealth.
Her four hands are graced by blessings and lotuses. A lovely red halo has emerged behind Her, enhancing the glowing complexion in the foreground. In the crease of Her leg She cradles a bejewelled pot, symbolic of wealth, and a plateful of sweetmeats has been placed at Her feet as an offering. The regal chamber She is seated in - the lush carpet and curtains, the studded altar - completes the picture.
