Indian art has never been surpassed in expressing with perfect simplicity and directness the pure devotion and self surrender implied in bhakti. The devotion of Radha towards Krishna was as much a portrayal in the celestial guise as it was a romantic theme.

This painting by Kailash Raj is a half portrait of Bani Thani, mistress of Raja Sawant Singh, who has assumed the form of Radha. She is shown with an elongated face, arched eyebrows, lotus shaped eyes tinged with pink and a sharp pointed chin. Curls of her black hair fall down the cheek, close to the ear, lending charm to her face. The head ornament sits on her forehead like a star with all its glory. Her ears are adorned with earrings in the style called 'jhumka.' Radha's swan-like neck bears the weight of pearl strings. She wears a transparent choli and the odhini is transparent too; both of which reveal more than they conceal. The subtle exposure joins hands with sheer eroticism to produce a stupendous picture. Muted natural shades have been used to paint the portrait. The artist's extraordinary skill enables him to reproduce meticulously, the literal details of ornaments and fabrics. The graceful figure of Radha has the dignity, placidity and profound grasp of the character. It is organically unified and is of high quality.
