The image of Nataraja is a superb masterpiece of the Chola bronze sculpture. The grandeur of its conception and symbolism have impressed connoisseurs throughout the world. This image has been replicated in almost all art forms.

Not to be left behind, batik, on large fabric canvas depicts Shiva Nataraja performing the cosmic dance Tandava on the demon Apasmara in the circle of fire. The dance movements represent the five attributes of Godhead: 1). Creation by vibration of the drum

2). Preservation by abhaya hasta mudra (gesture of fearlessness)

3). Destruction by the flame of fire

4). Embodiment by the hand pointing downwards

4) Salvation by the crushing of the demon

In a complex movement, Shiva's leg firmly rests on the back of the wriggling Apasmara Purusha. The rear two hands of Shiva carry the hour-glass shaped drum and a ball of fire, symbolic of creation and destruction.
