Males congregate when the courtship season arrives and perform a spectacular dance, having previously cleared the ground of debris. Early in the day an old male bird drops from a branch on to the ground and starts leaping about, then stands still with his tail fanned out and his wings spread, aping about again, and so on all day. About seven or eight other males follow suit and they keep up this acrobatic, puzzling performance well into the morning. It is a courtship dance of some kind but its precise purpose is till not clearly understood, especially since it is often after the eggs have been laid and have hatched.
