The Rig Veda refers to a ceremony in which a woman lay beside the corpse of her husband during the funeral: "Rise up, woman, into the world of the living. Come here; you are lying beside a man who took your hand and desired to have you."

The Tantric mythology of Shiva draws upon the old Sankhya myth of Purusha and Prakriti, the inert male principle of spirit (the corpse on the bottom), and the "ert" female principle of matter. The goddess in all her awesome power tramples on Shiva. That the corpse lying on the funeral pyre is that of Shiva is evident from textual identifications. Thus it is said that Kali came to earth one night to kill demons. When the earth trembled, unable to bear the burden, Shiva became a corpse and supported the three-eyed female. Another variant states that, when "once she gave free rein to her vigorous instinct for destruction,... Shiva himself had to mingle among the demons she was slaughtering and allow himself to be trampled underfoot in her dance of victory." In such images, the corpse of Shiva is supine but erect; he himself may lie lifeless, but his procreative power is always alive.

The positive effect of the goddess upon Shiva is made explicit by the Tantric texts, which point out that she is the vowel "i" that turns a corpse (shva) into a god (Shiva). She rides the god to give him life.
